Amsterdam Circle Line is the tourist sister of Smidtje Luxury Cruises.

Better known under the claim of “Amsterdam hospitality”, ‘t Smidtje focuses on organizing corporate and private boat events.

How it all started …

Smidtje Luxury Cruises was founded in 2001 in Amsterdam by Tomas de Smidt. From an early age Tomas had a thing for water and sailing. His father and grandfather often took him sailing in the North Sea and when his uncle Ben Bosboom founded the water taxi in Amsterdam, he became interested in large motorized boats. From cleaning pedal boats during his secondary school days to being a skipper through the Amsterdam canals next to his studies. The freedom of sailing and the fun was his fuel.

Being able to arrange everything himself from A to Z was his dream; his own tour company. In 2001 he literally and figuratively started working on his dream on his mother’s houseboat on the Ruysdaelkade. She ran a flower shop from this houseboat, also known as the Bloemenboot. His brother, Tijn, built a mini office on the outer deck of the Bloemenboot. Meanwhile, Tomas bought his first boat, ‘t Smidtje, and Smidtje Luxury Cruises was born. During the day he took bookings, in the evening he was also the captain of the ship. The business flourished quickly. The aim was to add one more boat every year.

History Amsterdam Circle Line

During the summer holidays, Tomas noticed that his fleet sailed less often, so he decided to set up a tourist sister of Smidtje Luxury Cruises and to respond well to this. He called it ”Amsterdam Circle Line”, the nicest round in Amsterdam. He started sailing from the Anne Frank House with a number of semi-open sloops. The Dutch weather is unpredictable, so people could enjoy the round of Amsterdam with both sun and rain. This concept started, and in the meantime Tomas had larger semi-open tour boats built. These canal boats now form the basis of the Amsterdam Circle Line.

Amsterdam character

The Amsterdam character is an important characteristic of both companies. Tomas is a born Amsterdammer himself, and over the years has also managed to bind Amsterdam employees and customers. That’s one of the reasons why Harry Slinger, a true Amsterdam singer, wants to commit to our brand. He even trades in his theater for one of our ships once a month and makes theater for private groups from the water. He has collected the most beautiful stories of Amsterdam for the Amsterdam Circle Line. We believe that every guest on board should get a glimpse of the real Amsterdam. This is only possible with stories from the local race of Amsterdammers. Harry was not only born and raised in Amsterdam, he breathes the city and calls it “his” city.
